Local Phone Competition Disappearing, except for VOIP

There's something you need to know about local phone competition. It's disappearing. Federal regulators are determined to eliminate UNE-P, which has provided a measure of competition to the big Baby Bells: Verizon, Southwestern Bell (SBC), Bell South, and Qwest. This will heavily affect both business and residential customers, but the biggest impact will be on residential, as most residential competitive offerings to the Baby Bells come from the UNE-P platform.

To make matters worse, there are still large portions of the country that still don't even have UNE-P based competition. They're still stuck with their old carriers, and there are no options.

Add in the high tariffs that the states require carriers to pay for in-state calls in many states around the country, and it's a really bad situation for the small-to-midsize phone user. In many states, you can't even get in-state long distance for less than 5 cents/min. In some states, you can end up paying over 20¢/min for in-state calls. Outrageous! Just thank your wonderful government regulators for this mess.

The Box

Well, now there is an alternative. It's called "The Box." Now, if you have a broadband connection to the internet via cable modem, DSL, or high-speed wireless, you can have a phone with phone number that let's you call long distance anywhere in the country for just 2.9¢/min. Incoming calls are free. If you want a toll-free number, that's just 3.9¢/min. And the monthly cost? Just $19.99 a month per line. That's right, I said $19.99 a month. Best of all, it's incredibly easy to install. You plug your phone into one end, your cable modem (or local area network) into the other end, and you're done. No technician required. It also works with PBX systems. Wow: what an incredible savings! Talk about dirt cheap! Talk about discount! Talk about saving money!

How do we legally avoid your ultra-high in-state rates? Simple. Your phone number is based in Tampa, Florida, even though you are wherever you are. Isn't the Internet wonderful! That means that we can legally allow you to call intrastate or even intralata at a fraction of your normal cost, because the call is no longer considered an in-state call under the law. Pretty neat, huh!

What states is the box available in? All of them: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming. Like I said, all we require is that you have a high-speed internet connection and a phone. That's all "the box" requires.
