"I Can't Match It," Said The Guy In My Local Mobile Phone Store 

Just how much money will you save with this supplier? Let me tell you what happened in my own case. I've been selling telecom products since 1995, so I always know the best places to get the lowest prices. When it came time for me to choose a new cell plan (in December 2004), obviously I went to my supplier and compared plans, phones, and carriers. I ultimately chose a T-Mobile family plan for my wife and I, with a pair of Motorola picture phones. Best of all, when all the rebates were received, I ended up making $100 on the deal. That's right...I made $100 just for buying this cell phone plan and getting two cell phones to boot!

But here's how I found out just how good a deal it was. I got word that there was some sort of discrepancy in the information I had provided. So my supplier asked me to visit a local T-Mobile dealer and have them take my info to submit directly to T-Mobile credit. I was a bit ticked off, but I decided it was worth the unexpected trip, given how much money I was going to save. 

Ultimately, the local dealer took photocopies of my drivers' license and social security card and faxed them in. While he was doing that, he did what any good retailer would do. He asked about the offer I'd gotten, hoping he could beat it.

So I told him. He looked at me quizzically and said that wasn't possible. I assured him it was. He asked me what the URL (web address) was. I gave it to him, then showed him how to surf the site to find the particular plan I was buying. Sure enough, there it was in black and white.

He shook his head sadly and said, "I don't know how they do it. Those phones you're getting cost me $199 each. I can get you a $50 rebate on them, but that's it. If I were to give you the same deal they're giving you, I'd lose a ton of money!"

He continued with a look of amazement on his face, "And look at this. They're throwing in two in-car chargers, two leather cases, two hands-free ear pieces, and free shipping, all at no extra charge. I don't know how they do it."

I smiled and said, "Well, I guess you can't blame me for taking their deal then!" He nodded his head and agreed, shook his head in amazement again, then wished me a Merry Christmas (which was coming in four days).

By the way, an interesting thing happened the next day. That same local dealer called me back and said, "I've crunched the numbers, and I can now offer you the same deal they're offering you, and you can have the phones right now!" I thought about it a minute. After all, there's certainly a benefit to not having to wait two days for the phones to arrive via Federal Express 2nd Day, even with free shipping. But then I asked myself, "Why is it that a deal which he couldn't touch yesterday is suddenly a deal he can do today? What changed?" I also realized that this didn't mean he was suddenly going to lower his pricing to everyone else; he was just going to lower it for me and me alone, because he figured it was a quick sale. I decided to decline and reward the company that had offered me the deal from the beginning with no prompting and no protesting: Simplexity. I figure that if enough people buy from suppliers like Simplexity, the retail dealers will be forced to rethink their pricing on a permanent basis. That's good for everyone, because prices like these should be available to everyone, regardless of whether they know about my website.
